Welcome to
The XPresso Bar
. (Also known as
Throb Spear Sex
to those diagnosed with
Anagram Insanity
.) I created this page to provide useful information about QuarkXPress, the page layout program that is an integral part of my job as a newspaper layout editor. I hope you find it useful. Let me know if there is anything I've missed and should add. -

Background image survey
A few people have told me I should get rid of the coffee bean background on this page because it makes the page too hard to read. Do they just have crappy monitors, or is it really that bad? Let me know what you think by filling out the following mini-form. I'll post/implement the results in a few weeks.
Bob, you should
keep
change
lose
your background image because
it looks cool.
it obscures the type.
it lengthens download.
I'm sick of coffee.

The

includes lots of helpful information about XPress. You can also sign up for an e-mail bulletin, which the folks who put this site together will send out every week or two.
A QuarkXPress FAQ is under construction. Several sections can be found at

Interaction
The Quark Express List (aka QUARKXPR) is read by hundreds of helpful XPress users, as well as tech support people at Quark. It's a great forum for asking (or answering) questions. Here's an
interface
for sending subscription commands to the list server. Here's the latest copy of
QUARKXPR Administrivia
, maintained by
Daniel Walker
.
There isn't a distinct newsgroup for QuarkXPress, but it is often discussed in
comp.text.desktop
and
comp.publish.prepress
.
You can sort of interact with
David Blatner
, a prolific writer of Quark books, through his page at Peachpit Press' site.
The many ways to contact Quark Inc. are listed at
Quark's contact page
.
The Herald in Everett, Wash., (where I work) is hosting a mailing list devoted to
DewarView
, a publishing system that uses QuarkXPress as its layout component. To subscribe, send e-mail to
macjordomo@heraldnet.com
with "subscribe dewarlist" (without the quotes) in the body of the message.
The QuarkXPress vs. PageMaker survey
results
haven't been updated since May 1995, so there's probably no point in filling out the
survey form
(or in me even including the links, but the pages are still there, so why not).
Downloads
ftp.telalink.net/pub/quark
: This FTP site, maintained by
David Anderson
, is the best one around for QuarkXPress users. Note: Most of these files are stored in binary form, which Netscape sometimes has problems with. If you find that files aren't downloading intact, try switching to Fetch or another dedicated FTP program.

: Easier to get into if you're in Finland.
Quark Inc.'s file library
: Straight from Denver to your desktop.
The
Virtual Shareware Library
has become my first stop when looking for software on the net. It has front desks located around the world, indexes the contents of several big archives, lets you search by platform, and shows you all the mirror sites where a specific file exists.
The
Info-Mac Hyperarchive
is the easiest way to look for stuff at the popular
Info-Mac
